  • Why choose alcohol as a solvent to make Herbal Extracts?
Alcohol is a powerful (and safe) solvent Alcohol is an excellent solvent for herbs as it is able to affectively extract all the fat soluble constituents as well as the water soluble ones. When tinctures are prepared professionally, specific water/alcohol proportions are used for each herb. Alcohol is a preservative In general, alcohol is a better solvent than water for most extracting most plant constituents. While removing nearly all relevant ingredients of a herb, it also acts as a preservative allowing the medicine to have a much longer shelf life. Alcohol allows us to create potent tinctures Alcohol-based tinctures are also highly potent and concentrated, meaning only a very small dose is required to reap the benefits. Understanding ratios and alcohol percentages in tinctures The amount of alcohol used will depend on the unique properties of the herbs and how much water they contain. The alcohol percentage refers to the percentage of ethanol in the tincture. Tinctures usually have 25% ethanol as a minimum. Which alcohol is used to make tinctures? Our practitioner-grade herbal liquids are made with non-GMO cane alcohol and filtered spring water. No heat is used during the manufacturing process. We use the cold percolation and maceration extraction method to ensure the preservation of herbal compounds. All of our products contain NO fillers and are free from sugar, artificial sweeteners, gluten, yeast, dairy, preservatives, colours and flavours. Given that the amount of tincture taken is very small the amount of alcohol consumed is negligible. Please reach out to The Gut Herbalist for more information about suggested use or if you need help choosing the product. We can recommend a herbal tincture or make a custom herbal blend to best suit your unique needs.
